First-Gen at Penn State

You’re the first. But you’re not alone.

At Penn State, more than 17,000 students are the first in their families to earn a college degree — and we’re proud to celebrate all that you bring to our campuses.

If your parents or guardians haven’t earned a four-year degree, you’re considered a first-generation college student. You might not have known that when you applied, but you’ve already shown courage, resilience, and determination by getting here.

The Chaiken Center for Student Success is here to walk with you through every step of your journey. From community and mentorship to coaching and celebrations, we’re here to help you find your people, build your skills, and reach your goals.
