What is First-Gen?

At Penn State, thousands of students like you are the first in your families to earn a college degree. With nearly 17,000 first-gen students making up about 25% of our undergrad population across the Commonwealth, we celebrate the unique contributions you bring to our community.

You might face challenges as you navigate college life and may not even realize you're first-gen until you get here. Penn State recognizes you as a first-generation student if your parents or guardians haven’t earned a bachelor’s degree.

The Chaiken Center for Student Success is here to support you throughout your college journey. We offer resources, coaching, and celebrate your achievements. Connect with us to learn about our events and initiatives designed to help you succeed!
